STORY BEHIND "DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?"

Here's some interesting tidbits about the Christmas Carol "Do You Hear What I Hear?"

1.  Written by Noel Regney & Gloris Shayne Baker in 1962.   They were married at the time. It was written as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

(I grew up thinking this song had been around since the 1800’s)

2.  Regney wrote the lyrics & Shayne the tune.  Regney was inspired to write the lyrics "Said the night wind to the little lamb, 'Do you see what I see?'" and "Pray for peace, people everywhere", after watching babies being pushed in stollers on the sidewalks of  New York City.

3.  Gloria Shayne stated years later that neither could personally perform the entire song at the time they wrote it because of the emotions surrounding the Cuban Missile Crisis. "Our little song broke us up. You must realize there was a threat of nuclear war at the time."

4.  Noel Regney was born Léon Schlienger in France.  Léon Schlienger, written backwards, is Noël Regnei (-lhcS. dropping "lhcS"replacing i by y).. He was drafted into the Nazi army despite being a Frenchman.  He soon deserted, joined a group of French Resistance fighters, and became a double agent working for the French. He led a party of Nazis into an ambush, was shot in the arm, but survived.

5.  Bing Crosby recorded the song in 1963 and it became a worldwide hit.

6.  Gloria Shayne was shopping at Bloomingdale's when she thought of the first music line.
