I was driving in my car the other day after filling up my car at a gas station and I got to thinking about the days of the full service gas station.   Hard to remember when I would pull up to a gas station, drive over the bell chord and then an attendant would come out.   You'd row down the window (not automatic window) and hand them your credit card or cash and say 'fill it up with unleaded'.   They'd check under your hood and wash your windows and fill up your car.   It was pretty nice.  This got me to thinking about a variety of things that have changed over time.   Below is a look at just a few……...

There used to be….rotary dial phones.
   Now there's….cell phones.

There used to be….row down windows in the car
   Now there's….automatic windows



There used to be….push down locks in the car
   Now there's….automatic locks

There used to be….typewriters
   Now there's….computers & iPads

There used to be….white out and that round eraser with the brush
    Now there's….the delete button



There used to be…..cursive handwriting
    Now there's….extra action for the thumbs with texting



There used to be….folded paper road maps
   Now there's….gps on phones and cars

There used to be….full service gas stations and the gas station driveway bell
   Now there's….self service

There used to be….price tags on every item in the grocery store
   Now there's….bar codes

There used to be….check-out worker at grocery store that entered each individual price
   Now there's….check-out people that scan the item (or you scan it yourself)



There used to be….air conditioning unit in the window or fans
   Now there's….central air conditioning

There used to be….ditto machines  (loved that smell)
   Now there's copy machines

There used to be….carbon paper
   Now there's copy machines



There used to be….pill bottles you could open
   Now there's….hard to open safety tops


There used to be….meals on airplanes
   Now there's….a biscoff cookie (if you're lucky)


There used to be….the ability to get on a plane using someone else's ticket.  
   Now there's….I.D. for each ticket plus personal body checks

There used to be….black & white Television with 3 channels & dial you moved yourself
   Now there's….hi-definition television and remote controls.


There used to be….VHS tape
   Now there's….Net Flix

There used to be….8-track cassette tapes and records
   Now there's….iTunes & Pandora radio


There used to be….a coffee percolator
   Now there's….Keurig & Starbucks

There used to be….camera with a flash bulb
   Now there's….iPhones for cameras

There used to be….manual credit card machines.
    Now there's….the automatic kind.     ( I always like the clicky/slide action of the old ones)

5 EVERYDAY PHRASES THAT COME FROM THE BIBLE

1.  BY THE SWEAT OF YOUR BROW

This is a saying used to convey that someone has earned their keep or way through hard work or manuel labor.


This can be found in Genesis 3: 19

“You will eat bread by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it.  For you are dust, and you will return to dust.”


This is not to be confused with the 3 pigs saying of 'by the hair of your chinny chin chin.'   Reading this verse I feel much better about the dust I see in our house all the time.   It's just little pieces of me hanging on the coffee table and such.    Maybe I should put the Pledge away and just enjoy it. Then again…..maybe not.


2.  MAN AFTER YOUR OWN HEART

If you say this about someone it means they are a person with similar tastes and preferences to you


This can be found in 1 Samuel 13:14

"But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”

Sometimes at Kroger Supermarket I run into a chick after my own cart, but this is not the same thing.

3.  OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES

This saying refers to how often insightful and remarkable wisdom can be spoken by children.

This can be found in Psalm 8:2

"Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger."

This saying is not to be confused with what comes out of the mouth of babes onto your clothing when you burp them.

4.  CAST YOUR PEARLS BEFORE SWINE

This phrase is usually in the negative form as in 'don't cast your pearls before swine' as it don't offer something of quality to someone who isn't cultured enough to appreciate it or similarly, don't waste something good on someone who isn't worth it.  

This comes from Matthew 7:6     

“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.    


I usually prefer my swine fried with a side of eggs and toast.

5.  IN THE TWINKLING OF AN EYE

This saying refers to something that happens very quickly

This comes from 1 Corinthians 15:52

 'In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. "

All of my silliness aside, this is an exciting verse from the Bible in that it is about the Rapture and our transformed bodies.  Scripture tells us that we will be given new bodies when Christ returns.  New bodies for our new eternal life.   Death has been defeated and we have hope beyond the grave.  That my friends…..is pretty awesome.

One thing that trips us up in our faith walk is when we try to obtain by our efforts what God wants to give us by His grace.

About a month ago I finished a book called 'Primal' by Mark Batterson.   He is a great Christian author and I recommend his various inspiring books.   I was recently thinking about a part in the book where he referred to Scripture as a kaleidoscope.  

For those who either don't remember back that far or never had one, a kaleidoscope contains fragments of colored glass at the end of a mirrored tube and reflects light in an endless variety of colors and patterns.   

And so it is with Scripture….

Batterson points out that we can read the same verse on different occasions and it will speak to us in totally different ways.    How cool that we can read the same verse numerous times and it speak to us differently each time.  That is a testament to its divine Author.   Our God that inspired writers thousands of years ago still illuminates readers of today.  

God has infinite knowledge of your personality, your dreams, your doubts, your history and your circumstances.   That is why Scripture speaks to us in kaleidoscopic ways.  As our lives and situations changes, the way we interpret verses changes too.

For me, the versea that have spoken to me the most over the years are Philippians 4: 6-7

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank Him for His answers.  If you do this you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand.  His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus" (New Living Version)

These verses have spoken to me in various ways over the years.   My parents gave me a New Living Bible in 1974 for Easter and I really loved it.   I could finally understand the Bible.  (I always struggled with the King James version)    I was only 10 yrs old at the time, but I found this passage from Philippians early on and it is still marked in that Bible today.  

Anytime I was stressed or worried (which was often) I would turn to this verse and it would bring me comfort.  This didn't mean I never worried again, but it helped.   The various things stressing me in life changed over the years from middle school to high school to college to job to marriage to tragedy to illness etc……and so I understand what Batterson is talking about when he refers to Scripture as a kaleidoscope.    

These verses are still the same verses, but the way I look at them changes like the image in a kaleidoscope each time I read them depending on what I'm going through.   

There is no greater manuel for life than the Bible.   God still speaks through His written word.  Whatever you may be going through, take some time to let Him speak to you.    I find it interesting that the word kaleidoscope is derived from a Greek word that means 'beauty, that which is seen'.    There is nothing more beautiful than hearing God speak to you through His written word.

SCENTS THAT EVOKE MEMORIES

Have you ever noticed that a particular scent can bring forth a rush of vivid memories? The smell of Vick’s VapoRub may remind you of having a cold as a child.  The smell of a campfire may remind you of Fall.

Among the 5 senses, smell has the strongest and most direct connection with memory.  Why does smell seem to act as such a powerful memory trigger?

First, the olfactory nerve is located very close to the area of the brain that is connected to the experience of emotion as well as emotional memory. 

The actual ability to smell is highly linked to memory. Research has shown that when areas of the brain connected to memory are damaged, the ability to identify smells is actually impaired. In order to identify a scent, you must remember when you have smelled it before and then connect it to visual information that occurred at the same time.

Here’s a look at a few scents that bring back memories for me and most likely some of them bring back memories for you too.
